Multi Purpose Brush May 14, 2010

Groomed Dog

We all know that brushing is important because, it massages the skin stimulating capillaries to promotes natural oil production for a healthy skin & coat. I don’t know about your hounds but mine have sensitive skin. So trying to brush them with a regular metal brush or plastic bristle brush was not happening. Tried it & failed it. It was hard to find one they tolerated let alone loved.  When you brush you are also brushing off dirt and foul smelling dander so they last clean longer, so it was very   important for me to brush them (especialy with a Husky). However I did find the Kong Zoom Groom Brush. Now,  it’s no Furminator but for those of you who don’t have long haired dogs or if your between your dogs shedding season it is an excellent brush. It picks up the extra hair from your dog or your furniture & keeps it contained to the brush till you peel it off the brush. Bath time is also a cinch. Hold the easy grip brush with the teeth facing up, then pour the shampoo on to the brush itself, the teeth & outer rim will hold everything in. Start scrubbing your dog with the brush, you’ll notice it’s easier. Why? Because with it’s nifty rubber teeth the soap is going through the fur easier  & to the  skin faster than your fingers could. Working a rich lather all over your pup. Also, because the brush is rubber & semi-flexible you can brush or scrub the face & paws/legs. You wouldn’t believe how much they actually shed from the face till you’ve tried it. I love this product. It comes in three colors  blue, red & purple. It can be found in the major pet stores such as PetSmart & Petco. Happy brushing!

What No Rubber Ducky? May 5, 2010

Allergies is a big issue for a lot of dog owner these day. One of the most common being skin allergies, which sucks because it could be any little thing. From fleas, food, grass, & yes even to the cat. unfortunately to treat this it’s a lot of trial and error. You can change the food, give him steroids, & so on. I myself had to battle some really bad allergies with my hounds & one of their biggest salvations was changing the shampoo & conditioner. We switched to a natural shampoo & conditioner from CloudStar, not only did it relieve their itching, it also left the soft, smelling & staying clean for days. It’s all natural so it’s very good for their skin & the environment. Best of all it doesn’t have that overpowering smell of cologne or leaves a powdery residue on your dog like when you pick them up from some groomers. What really helped was their cream for hotspots called Buddy Booboo it was discontinued for lack of sales, however if you google it, there are still some online boutiques that have it & of course Amazon has it. Believe me it’s well worth it, even though the tea tree oil smells really strong. So if you you find some Buddy Booboo stock up for all of us ( it’s awesome stuff, my bf uses it for mosquito bites). Not many people know of these CloudStar products. Currently www.petco.com is the only pet store chain that carries it & very sparingly. But you can definitely find it on their website www.cloudstar.com. The CloudStar website also offers a where to find tab. The Buddy Wash (shampoos), Buddy Rinse (conditioner) & Buddy Splash (perfume) comes in 3 light fresh scents: Original Lavender & Mint, Refreshing Rosemary & Mint, or Relaxing Green Tea & Bergamot. A breakdown of the ingredients of each scent is on there website. CloudStar’s grooming products are:

  • pH-balanced to be gentle on your dog’s sensitive skin
  • Free of potentially harmful SLS and ALS
  • Safe for use on puppies
  • Soap free – can be used in conjunction with topical flea treatments
  • Choose from 19 fl. oz., or 1 gallon size bottles.
  • Made in USA
  • Recyclable packaging

Well how much is this allergen reliever/deterrent going to cost me? Price depends on the size of the bottles, what you get & where you go. For Example on CloudStar’s website a standard 19fl. oz. bottle of shampoo or conditioner is $10.45 & the perfume is $4.95 for a 4fl. oz. bottle. I’ve bought one of each bottles and received free shipping in the past. Petco has the bottles for $8.97 (shampoo & conditioner) & the perfume for $5.97 online. Although you don’t get all the scents & price may very in your local Petco. However Petco does have it in a combo pack online along with FrontlinePlus, Brush & towels! Just type cloudstar in the search box, prices vary on Frontline dosage. Even www.drugstore.com has the shampoo & conditioner bottle for $7.49 a piece, but if you buy 2 you get $2.00 off. Again just type cloudstar in the search box. You’ll find different deals at different places. Honestly, what more could you ask for? I’ve been using this product for about a year & a half, my friends & I love it! *Please keep in mind if your pup has allergies it is best to go to the vet, as I said this is only one of the great things that helped my dogs. I do not think it would’ve been completely under control if it weren’t for the combination of patience, a good vet, these grooming tools, and a wonderful diet.*

To Stink or Not to Stink, Will No Longer be a Question. May 3, 2010

Show of hands for those of you that love a fresh smelling hound. I know I do, my apartment is to small to handle 2 stinky dogs. I tell you it takes me nearly 2 hours to bath my dogs between; the struggling on both our parts, the shampooing, the conditioning, the teeth brushing, & the bending, in the end it feels like a fulls days work. We go through all this trouble for a clean dog to place that stinky collar back on our clean pup. Our solution is to spritz it with puppy cologne. For those of you with active dogs or whom are dog park enthusiasts know that spritzing that collar was more for comfort. You’ve seen them rolling in who knows what, slobber on each other, dig up dirt & play in the mud. That collar has collected some STINK! That spritz is not going to do a darn thing. Is there no hope? Of course there is, what else am I here for? The solution is simple, a No Stink Collar made of a spacial blend of synthetic polymers that wont absorb moisture, retain dirt, or harbor bacteria cerated by Dublin Dog Company. Best part is they’re super green. They’re Dog Re-Gift/Re-Cycle is pawsome. You can get a 15% coupon on they’re collars if you give them your dogs old collar or one of they’re collars that is worn out. Your old collar will be donated to a shelter pup. If it was one theirs, they recycle it. Prices vary from $11.00-$30.00 depending on the size and pattern of the collar. Size availability going from S-XL also depends on the which collar you choose. However they do have a nifty size chart as you shop. Interested yet? Of course you are, thats why you’re going to go to www.dublindog.com & check them out. Might I also add that The Dublin Dog Foundation is partnering with Freedom Service Dogs for their second annual fund raiser. The Freedom Service Dogs organization rescues gives shelter dogs a second chance by training them to assist a person with disability, specifically to disabled military veterans. Many of us as dog lovers think of our hounds as our babies, part of the family. Completely forgetting their dogs altogether, especially with the little ones. We get so caught up conforming & molding them to our needs & our societys’ standards of living we forget they’re animals with insticts altogether. Ofcourse intellectually we know they are animals, but its not the first thing you see in them. First you see Fido & its not an till Fido eats your Steve Maddens (shoes) or poo that you see dog. However we tend to ignore their animal side, their heritage. About a week ago I was given a not very fun but enlightening reminder of this. Although my Skyler is wonderful with kids & great with cats he has a duck weaknes. You’d think Patch my Lab Mix would be the one with this particular issue. Not so, her insticnts work diffrently, she’s the protector & the nose in the family. She’ll growl at someone three floors below us across the street, from inside the apartment as she watches thru the balcony window from the couch. Getting back to out protagonist, Early one morning I was dropping off the pups off at grandma’s on the way to work. I let the dogs out of the car to lead them to the front door. Suddenly Skyler took off after a flock of ducks I failed to notice near the car. It goes without saying I ran after him, passing 6 houses with Patch sprinting beside me determined not to be left out of the fun. My heart is thunping in my ears, my mind is racing with random thoughts. “I’m going to kill him!” “A car is going to hit him!” I’m going to be late for work!” “That poor duck!” “I’m going to kill him!” He turned into someones backyard, I followed but just missed him. By the time I’d reached the backyard he’d gone around the front of the yard, I was about to follow as he made his way back chasing a duck. At that instant everything slowed. Letting Patch & I see Skyler as an animal. His gaze was focused, excited  & joyous with his hunt. I tried to catch him from the side, he just turned his agile body away from me at the last second while steadly running towards his goal. It’s odd how a bad moment can happen so fast yet so slowly. All I could do was stare as his instict took over the chase & caught the bird shaking it slightly as it struggled. At that instant you think he’s gone  completly wild. Then the duck settled and he gently with great control pinned his neck on the ground. You realize he isn’t going to maul it,  so long as the duck stayed still he was satisfied with gently pinning it down, like he would one of his doggy friends. I took that moment to get him from the scruff & tell him to drop it, he did. The bird wadled away a little shaken up but otherwise unscathed. He just needed a good chase. So I leashed him up & we all walked back to grandma’s side by side. While doing so I noticed the trot in his step. Completly proud of himself. A satisfied Husky grin on his face with his tongue dangling out the side. His insticts fullfilled for the moment he was happy. This in NO way means I condone his behavior, It just helps me explain my previous statement from the beginging of this post. My dog is not just my baby, there to satisfy my needs as a pet owner. He’s also a animal & has his own needs as such. Perhaps I’ll take him to a hunting course or a lure course to help him satisfy his inner animal. Understanding your dog & compromising to a point makes for a happy hound.
